Sport is big business. Although the credit-crunch effected most of the (sport)marketing budgets, the total worldwide sport sponsoring over 2008 is roughly estimated on €25 billion. Because of the current crisis companies tend to go back to the old marketing techniques, however a growing group of companies is also looking for other ways of advertising than the standard (and often expensive) channels.
Advertising through a logo on a sail or otherwise on a boat is an extremely effective way to put your company in the picture. Take a sunny day to visit a nearby lake or sea and you will see that 99% of the boats have no form of advertising whatsoever. As you will see, all sails of the sailing boats are plain white.

Now imagine that same sunny day along the coast. Everybody is relaxing and watching the water/horizon and all over sudden appears a beautiful sail boat with your advertisement. Do you have any idea how many people could be watching your advertisement? Or should we say, could possibly not see it? Such an advertisement is one of the most cost effective ways to promote your company. It is actually a pr, marketing and advertising campaign in one.

On the side of the sponsor we see nowadays companies who would like to manifest themselves as a supplier of a (high) quality product, like Rolex, Coca-Cola, Volvo and BMW.
These parties are often the sponsors of the big sail competitions. A sponsorship in which millions are involved. However, that part of the business is not our cup of tea.
We are more interested in the recreational side, possibly combined with an event. This form of advertising is already applied in the USA, where several companies have been realizing demonstrable turnover increases of hundreds(!) of percentages.
Watersport has a tough and avonturous image and is known as a sport where 'scandals' barely take place. The targetgroup is kwonw to be one that next to sailing also practice sports like tennis and golf.
In short: the more financially strong targetgroup. But not alone quality is important, also quantity is.
There are hundreds of million watersport practicioners, so we are not talking about a selective group.
